Orbital control of Pleistocene euxinia in Lake Magadi, Kenya

چکیده
Lake Magadi is an internally drained, saline and alkaline terminal sump in the southern Kenya Rift. Geochemistry of samples from ~200 m core representing past ~1 m.y. lake’s history shows some highest concentrations transition metals metalloids ever reported lacustrine sediment, including redox-sensitive elements molybdenum, arsenic, vanadium. Elevated these represent times when hypolimnion was euxinic—that is, anoxic, saline, sulfide-rich. Euxinia common after ca. 700 ka, that tended to occur during intervals high orbital eccentricity. These were likely high-frequency hydrologic changes favored repeated episodes euxinia sulfide precipitation. High-amplitude environmental fluctuations at peak eccentricity impacted water balance terrestrial habitats resource availability for early hominins. are associated with important events human evolution, first appearance Middle Stone Age technology between 500 320 ka

Authigenic Clay Formation and Diagenetic Reactions, Lake Magadi, Kenya
The purpose of this study is to understand mineral diagenesis authigenic mineral and the effect of climate on mineral of Pleistocene-Holocene sediment deposits in the Southern Kenya Rift. Lake Magadi unique geologic settings are characterized by extreme alkalinity and high silica activities. The mineralogical analysis was achieved by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM...
متن کاملHyperspectral remote sensing of evaporate minerals and associated sediments in Lake Magadi area, Kenya
Pleistocene to present evaporitic lacustrine sediments in Lake Magadi, East African Rift Valley, Kenya were studied and mapped using spectral remote sensing methods. This approach incorporated surface mineral mapping using space-borne hyperspectral Hyperion imagery together with laboratory analysis, including visible, near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (VNIR) measurements and X-ray ...
متن کاملStable isotope paleoecology of Late Pleistocene Middle Stone Age humans from the Lake Victoria basin, Kenya.
Paleoanthropologists have long argued that environmental pressures played a key role in human evolution. However, our understanding of how these pressures mediated the behavioral and biological diversity of early modern humans and their migration patterns within and out of Africa is limited by a lack of archaeological evidence associated with detailed paleoenvironmental data. Here, we present t...

متن کاملControls of Tufa Development in Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, Utah
Prominent tufa localities along the Provo level (∼14,000 C yr B.P.) shoreline in Pleistocene Lake Bonneville have been characterized in detail. Three types of tufa are recognized: capping tufa, beachrock, and capping tufa over beachrock. Capping tufa and beachrock are end members of a continuum based on variable clastic content. All three types typically occur on headland environments that had ...
